2022 Joseph Burrier Pouilly-Fuissé ’Vers Cras’
HISTORY & TERROIR
Mâconnais is the more southern sub-region of Burgundy. The Pouilly-Fuissé AOC is situated where the contours become more marked, around the famous rocky cliffs of Vergisson and Solutré-Pouilly and the two other villages of Fuissé and Chaintré. The vineyards cover steep sloping cirques, facing east and south-east, on which the soils are a mixture of clay and chalk from the Jurassic era, from 200 to 400 meters altitude. The villages of Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly, Vergisson and Chaintré are the exclusive production area of the Pouilly-Fuissé AOP which covers 800 ha, including 193 ha of Premiers Crus (from vintage 2020) exclusively planted with Chardonnay. ‘VERS CRAS’ is one the 22 Premiers Crus recently classified, located on the Beauregard plateau. The vines were planted during the seventies and the eighties. Organic culture in conversion. No herbicides nor pesticides used. Est/North-Est exposure, altitude 240-260 m, slope 0-10%, soils consisting of thin clay, well structured, very stony, laying on very chalky white Coralian limestones, massive and hard on some places. This kind of pedology and topography is very convenient for Chardonnay, giving mineral, pure and salty wines.
WINEMAKING
Harvested at optimal ripeness, our grapes are pressed in taking care to extract structure from the berries skin and thus prevent premature oxidation, then the musts are allowed 12 to 24 hours to settle down (débourbage). The fermentation takes place with natural yeasts in 228 l traditional casks, then the ageing on fine lies last about 1 year in the casks and a few months in vat. Our patient and natural winemaking methods, non-interventionist, do allow our wines to get the expression of each individual ‘Terroir’.
TASTING NOTES
In its youth the ‘Vers Cras’ reveals a lively nose of apple, ripe citrus, seasoned vanilla oak and gentle patisserie spice leads into a rich, concentrated and silky palate. It has perky citric acidity and a classy, savoury character, with all the layers of flavour intermingling wonderfully. The finish is long with citrus fruits savours. After some time it will show notes of toast bread and honey.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Joseph Burrier continues the tradition of their family, working in the vineyards of Southern Burgundy for more than 5 centuries and 17 generations. Today, they farm Château de Beauregard and Domaine Georges Burrier in Fuissé, Château du Clos in Pouilly, Domaine de la Rochette in Milly-Lamartine and Domaine Joseph Burrier in Fleurie.
